The unknown artist who made the music box, that now sat on a table in Caydance's studio loft in a beach house not far from Santa Cruz, had been listed in the catalog as Christine Pizan, but Pizan was a medieval scribe; a contemporary artist of that name was not known. The ancient Book of Hours discovered concealed inside the music box was primary. But Sidonie Frazier, the collector who hired Caydance to deconstruct the imagery on the music box -- and to reveal the identity of its maker -- thought that on the music box itself, there were clues to the manuscript's journey.

arrow In contrast to the tan shorts and faded pink tee-shirt that Caydance wore and the California summer beach view, visible from the window, on the music box base, the first image was a group of soldiers on 1940's era skis, standing in snow against a mountain backdrop. Identified by her Father, this scene was clearly set at Camp Hale, a training place for the Alpine and Nordic skiers, the outdoorsmen, and the mountain climbers of the 10th Army Mountain Division. In the Colorado mountains, at an altitude of 9,000 feet, Camp Hale was a place of cold-weather endurance, where -- in preparation for warfare in the mountains that bordered Nazi-held territory -- men climbed mountains carrying 90 pound packs, fired rifles in frigid air, slept in the snow without sleeping bags.
