beach house window North of Santa Cruz, out the window of Griff's beach house, a small boat sailed on the Pacific Ocean. Crossing Caydance's field of vision as if it was a distant seen-and-then-not-seen mirage, it passed so rapidly that it called to mind not the more solidly painted images on the music box, but one of the gold-enclosed sea travel-resonant paintings in the pages of the Book of Hours -- where sea creatures swam in gilded insets, and aboard a medieval fishing boat, an unusual version of the Miraculous Catch of Fish occupied a separate page.
