Rolling hills, steep cliffs and a sunny distant beach were visible out the front window of Griff's cottage on the Huygens campus. Out another window, cars, some with California license plates, some with out-of-state license plates, were moving one at a time (it was a narrow road) up the hill to the campus. Griff had already had breakfast and departed for the President's Lawn, on which colorful tents had been erected and welcoming tables set up. Among them was a "Welcome Football Team" area, the place where incoming student players would be checked in and issued practice gear, practice information, and the Fall Game Schedule.
For Caydance, Saturday, two weeks until her first class began, was a day for summer artmaking, as well as a day to begin to revise the syllabus for her studio class on artists books. But, at Huygens, it was the day when students arrived for pre-season football camp.
Propped up on a table, where Caydance had laid out pen and ink and a smooth sheet of mulberry paper, was an engraved card inviting Griff and her to the President's welcoming dinner this very evening.
