At a Mission
District taqueria, accompanied by two carnitas tacos with sour cream, guacamole, and an assortment of contaIners from the salsa bar, Caydance considered the woman who bought the original music box. "About your age, maybe a little older," the Thrift Town cashier observed. Too young to be Pete Lafitte's Land Girl sweetheart -- she would now be at least in her 60’s -- this woman took the music box home, removed the dancer, and in her place created a diorama of a ruined edifice sunk into a mountain; painted scenes on the sides, hid a 500 year-old manuscript inside; smuggled the altered object into an exhibition under a false name. Who was she? In this quest, there was always an issue of how far to tread. Sido had not meant to buy a manuscript potentially worth a quarter of a million dollars when she purchased the music box. Now, she sought guidance regarding where the Book of Hours should ultimately reside. How far to follow the trail was an open question.
The taqueria where Caydance sat was a favorite place to meet Edelira, but Edelira and JuanJose were now in Miami, where she was going for a graduate degree in ethnomusicology, and he was drumming for a friend's band. Something was always missing when Edelira disappeared from Caydance's life. She was remembering that on the day when Edelira and JuanJose were married, Edelira arrived at the Church in a multi-color streamer-adorned red convertible.
