On the weekend of the first two games in the 1989 World Series, the two paragraph Chronicle coverage of the Huygens-Swifts game read:
"Led by former Trojans' Center, Coach "Skyscraper" Cole and senior Quarterback, Cougar Joe Thatcher, using a polished no-huddle Offense, the LA Basin Swifts were cruising to victory with a two touchdown lead in the high scoring first half of Saturday's Huygens-Swifts game. But in the second half, under former Raider Wide Receiver, Coach Griff McGuire, Huygens broke the Swifts' Offensive strategy. McGuire credits Defense Coach Kekoa Alualu (former Cornerback, University of Hawaii at Manoa) for
rallying Huygens Defense and Middle Linebacker Joshua Ben Singer for turning the tide with his uncanny ability to direct Defense on the field.
In the final minutes of the game, with the score Swifts 38-Hugens 34, Huygens Quarterback River Angelos -- aided by Running Back Gerry Sun's remarkable clock-intuitive forward progress and an extraordinary catch in the end zone by Tight End Caesar Jose Ortega -- Huygens scored. When Will O'Arragan, who had kicked two perfect field goals, kicked the ball through the goal posts for the final point, only 16 seconds remained. The Swifts no-huddle Offense might have posed a tying field goal threat, but led by Darnell Medina and Noah Jones, Defense twice sacked Cougar Joe Thatcher. 'That was good', Coach McGuire remarked."
