On Monday night, October 2, 1989, Griff arrived at Caydance's studio with several bags of takeout from Clown Alley (two bacon cheeseburgers on sesame seed buns with lettuce and tomato; one order of chili fries; two orders of extra French fries; a New York steak sandwich on the side); and a six pack of Maui Lager, a present from Kekoa, whose brother, a Maui Brewing Company distributer, was applying for the part-time job of Huygens Tech Athletic Operations Manager.

Caydance had finished prepping for her Tuesday class. Griff had been on the phone with the coach of the Rogue River Eagles; game films were passing each other in expediated mail between Oregon and Huygens Tech. "It's not far from Ashland, Griff said to Caydance, "but we'll have to make the six hour trip on Friday and stay in a hotel. Durango is in charge of the Defense bus, and I'm in charge of the Offense bus. Mira continues to play the flute in San Diego. Yuri will be spending Friday and Saturday at the President's house." To distract Caydance, while she set out napkins and plates, he filled two tall beer glasses with Maui lager.

"Yuri is spending the weekend at President's House?"

"Yuri does not have a large television screen where he lives. He was sad because from Leningrad where he has many friends, he has received a large shipment of not widely circulated Russian hockey films. You will never know he is there."

arrow Caydance was pretty sure that Yuri was there because the immediate area would be unprotected while Griff and Durango were in Oregon. She would spend Friday night in her studio, she silently decided. "He can also work on his review of either the Cubist exhibition at SFMOMA or the computer-mediated works of interactive art at the Richmond Art Center," she said. "It's due next Tuesday."
