football stadium We already have a NCAA regulation football field, Huygens President Palacio-Earle emphasized when he presented his plan for a D3 athletic program to the Trustees.

At that time, Schools such as MIT, Cal Tech, Johns Hopkins, and Carnegie Mellon had D3 teams. There were rules as regards football recruiting. For instance, they were not permitted to give football scholarships, but with academic scholarships they could attract High School STEM students who wanted to continue to play football, while at the same time pursue their research and studies at a high level.

"Practice Hours are considerably less for D3 teams than would be expected at known football power colleges," Palacio-Earle told the trustees. "But there are or were players from D3 schools or comparable small colleges, who were selected in the NFL draft, including with the Raiders: Gene Upshaw, Art Shell, and Willie Brown and with the 49ers: Jerry Rice."

And so, with Gene Upshaw and Jerry Rice, Dr. Durango Palacio-Earle made his case for a Huygens Tech football team.

The first Head Coach would be Griff McGuire, former Oakland and LA Raiders Wide Receiver, recent Graduate Assistant Coach for Stanford football. His Stanford law degree would be helpful in negotiating NCAA Division 3 rules.
