In the Autumn of 1988, on unofficial visits, Professor Durango Palacio-Earle scouted high school teams, seeking brilliant scholars with on field football skills to whom he could offer generous academic funding.
Soon, scouting reports dominated Huygens faculty meetings.
It was at this point that hiring a football coach was suggested, and a distinguished mathematician, Professor James Bond, put forward the credentials of the son of one of his colleagues.
"Recently I co-authored a paper with Professor Claude McGuire. Claude's son played for the Huskies under Don James, and he is a former Wide Receiver for the Raiders, first under Coach Madden and then under Coach Flores."
"Griff is currently in his last year studying law at Stanford," Bond continued, “where he is a graduate assistant football coach.”
And so it came to pass, that although Griff McGuire was not the only applicant for the job of Huygens Head Coach, he was the first to sit in front of the Huygens faculty and draw offensive strategies on the faculty room blackboard.
