The night before Caydance's class was by tradition spent in her studio, and traditionally Griff walked her to art school in the morning. As often occurred -- beginning with Quiche Loraine, pate de campagne, salade verte a la francaise, and a just-baked baguette -- dinner was takeout from a local French deli.
"Yes”, she said to Griff, "the name of the probable first occupant of the studio/workshop is Theodore Sinclair Treharne, known as Ted." The retired archivist who provided this information is silver-haired Kendrick MacGillivray. He lives not far from the campus."
"Is there any creme brulee left?" Griff asked. He was attempting to focus on something less important than the Humbodlt D-Line. Retrieving another creme brulee pot from the sideboard, topping it with whipped cream, and rum-soaked strawberries, Caydance replied that the need for more creme brulee was always expected.
"But," she told Griff, "all Kendrick knew about Ted was what librarians usually know: what Ted was researching. The last time Kendrick saw him, Ted was in Army uniform, and In 1942 it was not wise to ask where soldiers were heading. However," Caydance continued, "we know that Ted is the man we seek because Kendrick gave him a rare book, and that book is on the desk in the workshop."
