"Huygens 28 - Diablo Mountain 21. Upstart IC Chips upset the Wolves." The Chronicle arrived Sunday morning at Griff's beach house North of Santa Cruz.

"I told Durango our name should be a wild animal, but IC Chips sort of works here," Griff said to Caydance. She was standing behind him, looking over his shoulder. Skipping paragraphs which covered the First Half 14-14 defense struggle, he read the highlights out loud:

"'Beaten by The Wolves-- by only one point in last year's game -- this year in the Half Time locker room Huygens confronted their Coach, Former Raiders Wide Receiver Griff McGuire. They argued for beginning the Second Half with a series of plays practiced during football summer camp. 'It was,' Huygens Quarterback River Angelos, told The Chronicle, 'The 92-yard drive that the Niners ran to beat the Bengals in the final minutes of last year's Super Bowl.'

"I won't read how the Chron's awestruck local game reporter describes our near perfect sequence of plays that began with Angelos to B2 and concluded with the Angelos to Murphy touchdown. We can watch that again tonight."

Skipping, for other reasons, The Chronicle's account of how thanks to the Wolves powerful Defense, his expected momentum did not carry into the core of the Third Quarter, Griff resumed reading: 'At the start of the Fourth Quarter, the Wolves struck back with a sustained drive that concluded with a 30 yard completed pass from NFL Draft prospect Quarterback Oluwa Jones to Wide Receiver Sergio Basilio Rosario. IC Chips 21 - Wolves 21.'"

In the beach house, Coach McGuire paused. "Here comes the good part: 'In the next possession, keyed by Running Back Gerry Sun's trademark maze-traversing run through a thicket of opposition defense, Huygens had the ball on the Diablo 10. The Wolves lined up as if anticipating a repeat of the Niners' Super Bowl winning last pass of the drive. Instead, Angelos ran the ball into the End Zone himself. IC Chips 28 - Wolves 21.'"

Griff turned to Caydance. "Huygens is undefeated. Dinner on the wharf, watching boats set sail from the harbor. Steak and seafood, champagne?"
