"We are postponing the game because there is no power in the stadium," Major League Baseball commissioner Fay Vincent announced. "We would like you to leave in an orderly way."
There were over 60,000 people in the stands. Among them were former 49ers Wide Receiver, Dwight Clark and Joe Montana with his wife Jennifer and their newborn baby. The last time that Griff played at Candlestick was a Raiders Niners preseason game: Jim Plunkett vs Joe Montana. It would have been a better memory if the Raiders had won.
That this cold, windy stadium where he once played was still standing, and that no one there perished when the earthquake hit was one of the week's miracles that for Griff also included the survival of his wife's studio – as well as her art school on Chestnut, which closely bordered the built-on-landfill hard hit Marina District.
As his Father advised, Griff had his cabin retrofitted before he moved in. And, reported by Bob and Tommy, who slept there the nights of October 17 and October 18, there was no structural damage to his beach house. "Griffie, the aftershocks in our own homes were terrifying. Much of your beer and chips were required to combat our distress. Your grill had blown onto the beach, but we were able to retrieve it and cook the steaks we found in your refrigerator."
The Niners would play their scheduled October 22 game against the Patriots at Stanford Stadium (Montana vs Grogan). But Huygens would not be playing Redwood Forest College on Saturday. There were holes in the Huygens Playing Field, and the Redwood Forest team was helping displaced people in the Marina District where Coach Alistair's family resided.
